How to protect your infant's skin

1. Avoid using harsh soaps, shampoos, colognes and powders that may contain irritating chemicals. Choose those that are made especially for babies.

2. Keep the baby free from urine and feces. If the baby is wet and has feces, clean and dry him up immediately. Throw dirty diapers into appropriate containers. If a cloth (non-disposable) diaper is used, wash it immediately with mild soap.

3. The rubbing of skin to clothes exposes the infant to irritations. Let your baby wear soft and loose garments and use powder to reduce friction and keep the baby comfortable.

4. Avoid too much exposure to sunlight. Babies get sunburned easily because they lack melanin to protect their skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Although morning exposure (around 8-9am) is healthy, going beyond this will be harmful. Use a sunscreen protection but choose the brand that has no irritants. Don't apply on your baby's skin a sunscreen for adults.
